Queensland Health have today provided the following information regarding laboratories testing COVID-19 samples.
Testing will be performed by Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology at their Bowen Hills laboratory. Once the specimen has reached the laboratory, the turnaround time (TAT) will be 24-72 hours. As the test numbers increase this TAT is likely to increase. The results will be released as soon as available and all positives will be notified to the referring doctor.
In Queensland, provided outstanding supplies can be secured, there will be additional public testing by the end of May at:
- Cairns Hospital Laboratory
- Rockhampton Hospital Laboratory
- Toowoomba Hospital Laboratory
- Sunshine Coast University Hospital Laboratory
- Gold Coast University Hospital Laboratory
This will improve turnaround times for smaller communities. Pathology Queensland’s transport arrangements are that tests that cannot be conducted locally are sent from these smaller facilities to their Group Lab (hub).
Within the same time and provided sufficient supplies can be secured, low volume testing capability will be carried out within many of these smaller labs. But where demand exceeds supply, the low volume of such testing will of necessity require that such testing be prioritised for inpatient and emergency department clinical care decisions.
