31 May 2020 | On-site testing for COVID-19

The Queensland Chief Health Officer (CHO) supports resources companies opting to have their own on-site COVID-19 testing, particularly those in remote areas. This is preferable to workers travelling long distances for testing.
Nasal sampling should be undertaken by a trained on-site medical officer or qualified trained nurse, and sent to a testing lab for analysis. Companies should consider extra training for their on-site medical staff who conduct the testing, as it is not an easy procedure. Information for Queensland clinicians is available on the Queensland Health website.
Resources companies who opt to conduct on-site tests should also contact testing labs to discuss arrangements prior to sending their samples, as some labs many not have adequate testing equipment available which could delay results.
